Train the Mind, Change the World
Socially-engaged Wisdom

I am delighted to announce the next step in my teaching.   My friend and colleague, Michael Brooks, and I will be offering a unique seminar this July, merging the insights of Buddhism and Behavioral Economics.  Please read on...

“Human beings are more Homer Simpson than Doctor Spock," say Cass Sunstein and Richard Thaler in their bestselling book, Nudge.  Humans make mistakes, judge situations based on faulty rules of thumb and rush into decisions.  The rational man or perfect Spock -- an ideal created in the 17th century-- is taking a beating from the very field he once dominated: economics.
Until now, it has been taken for granted that humans make decisions based on rational and calculated thought.  However, vanguard economists are coming to the consensus that pure rational choice is a myth.

So, in light of this, how can we prod our inner-Homer to make better decisions for ourselves and for the planet?  It’s not simply a matter of new information and better paradigm promotion.   What is required now is that the mind inhabiting these very paradigms be equipped with habits and tools to effectively implement recognizable transformation.

At this point Buddhism and meditation has successfully created bridges with vital fields including healthcare, neuroscience and psychology.  We now need to see how meditation and ethical practices can facilitate enlightened habits in social, economic and political domains.

Please join Michael and me for this fun and innovative amalgamation of Buddhadharma and Behavioral Economics (doesn’t that sound fun?)

This 5–Week Seminar will cover the following:
  •     Effective strategies for developing an ongoing meditation practice that anyone can follow.
  •     Education on the theory of choice architecture so that you can better circumvent your inner-Homer.
  •     Construction and implemention of enlightened habits for social and ecological welfare.
  •     Liberation of the Wisdom Body for greater creative flow and empowered communication.
  •     Guided meditation sessions each meeting with relevant instruction.
The workshop will be held at 581 Boylston St., and is limited to 14 participants, maximum.
